A Marshakovskie reading took place in Jerusalem for the first time

Readings dedicated to the work of the remarkable Soviet poet and translator Samuel Marshak, took place on May 3, at the Jerusalem Center for Fine Arts, located in the ancient walls of the Old City.

The idea of Marshakovskie readings and highlighting the biography of the poet in major cities, came from the Voronezh Regional Governor Alexei Gordeyev. As it is known, in Voronezh, where Marshak spent his childhood, a monument was set in his honor.

The first Marshakovskie reading took place in 2015 in Moscow. The Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) is the organizer of the readings in Jerusalem, where Samuel Marshak stayed in the early 20th century.

The opening was attended by readings from Voronezh Region Governor Alexei Gordeyev, Chairman of the RJC Yuri Kanner, Russia's ambassador to Israel, Alexander Shein, representatives of the Russian Embassy, director of the Russian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv, Natalia Yakimchuk and a delegation from the Voronezh regional administration.

Poems and Translations from the authorship of Samuel Marshak in Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian were read by well-known Russian and Israeli political figures, prominent representatives of culture and science of both countries. Israeli ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman read a fragment of the famous satirical poem "Mister Twister" ,in Yiddish poems by Robert Burns, the Marshak translation was read by the poet Igor Guberman.

The story of the poet's stay in Jerusalem was told by the grandson of S.Y. Marshak, the historian Alexei Speransky, who for a quarter of a century is living in Israel. There were also songs and classical works on Marshak's poems. Special attention was paid by the large audience to the rare photos from the archives of the poet's family and the withdrawn trailer of a short film on his life and work.

The following Marshakovskie readings are planned in London and St. Petersburg
